{"id":3250,"date":"2022-04-07T09:02:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-07T14:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/?p=3250"},"modified":"2022-04-07T15:08:29","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T20:08:29","slug":"from-classroom-to-legal-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/from-classroom-to-legal-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"From Classroom to Legal Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Legal Studies Department gave 15 Winona State University students the opportunity to make a difference in someone else\u2019s life by helping prevent certain legal cases from being an obstacle to employment and housing. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gregory Richard, an Associate Professor of History and Legal Studies, along with Ms. Kathy Sublett, a co-collaborator of the non-profit Let&#8217;s Erase the Stigma, ran two Expungement Clinics in Winona to help clients in Southeastern Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>The expungements will help seal criminal histories, so records are no longer accessible to the public, meaning better eligibility for housing and employment, especially for marginalized communities. Although not widely available, the records would still be seen by certain government and state agencies.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The clinics\u2014which were free and filled up quickly\u2014gave WSU students the experience of helping determine which offenses were eligible for expungement, prepare petitions for the court, and determine fee waiver eligibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2022\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-8.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;MicrosoftTeams-image (8)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Richard and Sublett teamed up to run the clinics in the Winona area to give access to those who were unable to go to the next nearest clinic more than 100 miles away. They also wanted to give students an engaging learning experience to apply what students are learning in class to a real-life setting. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Not everybody has the access to go up to St. Paul and not everybody has the access to childcare for eight hours either,\u201d Sublett said. \u201cPeople who are seeking expungement have already gone through enough hurdles.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The opportunity of running clinics in Winona granted WSU Legal Studies majors the chance to work alongside residents from four different counties, including the Winona community. The real-world experience students gained couldn&#8217;t be taught in a classroom, Richard said. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cStudents are being impacted by simply working with real clients, real people with real problems,\u201d Richard said. \u201cThey are learning about the needs of others, legal and otherwise, and they are using what they have learned here at WSU to bring justice and opportunity for these clients.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mitchell Prosser, a WSU student who worked at the clinic, said it felt great to be making a difference.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIn many cases, these individuals have been denied jobs and have been denied housing,\u201d Prosser said. \u201cWith the expungement process, they have the ability to apply for jobs and housing without restrictions.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Not only was the experience valuable in applying knowledge from their classes, but it also prepared students to be better advocates in legal justice careers by seeing a case data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThey are invested in the criminal justice system,\u201d said Sublett. \u201cTo know that you have students that have been afforded the opportunity to go to college and they want to help people in less fortunate situations\u2014that\u2019s phenomenal to me.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span
