Not only did it have her two personal requirements, but also it had an extra focus that, for her, meant a lot.<\/p>\n<p>While walking through campus, she looked up and saw banners with the phrase, A Community of Learners Improving Our World.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt literally spoke to me,\u201d she said. \u201cThat&#8217;s what I&#8217;m all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later in the tour, she spoke to Nursing professors about her dream to pair a Spanish major with a Nursing major. Instead of pointing out the challenges of double majoring, they cheered her on in support of her making the most of her four years.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Winona State had checked every box. And it was here that she thrived, not only in her double major, but also in her craving to improve the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nusbaum was selected for the <span data-contrast=\"none\">MN Campus Compact Award, in addition to the WSU Award, for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">her <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">service to communities, both locally and globally; her passion for engaging others in community service and partnerships; and her \u201cethical obligation to advocate for those who do not have a voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>She was also selected as one of the Outstanding Students of Spring 2022 for WSU\u2019s Nursing program.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Nusbaum, it all centers around her passion to help people and eliminate language barriers\u2014especially within health care. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When COVID-19 hit her sophomore year, Nusbaum was studying abroad in Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After two months of being abroad, she had to return to the U.S. before the borders closed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although her time abroad was cut short, she was determined to have meaningful experiences in other places that still combined her passions for Spanish and Nursing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Little did she know that she wouldn\u2019t have to travel to another country to find it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While participating in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.winona.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=27&amp;coid=43485\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Population Health Clinicals<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Nusbaum realized that the Winona area has a high percentage population with Spanish as a first language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She also realized that nurses with her skillsets can come in handy during appointments. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>On one specific day, Nusbaum helped a client through their entire appointment with the encouragement and support of her professors Kathryn Frie and Autumn Cole.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cComing home and knowing that I played a role in that person\u2019s ability to receive health services is a feeling I hope I never forget,\u201d Nusbaum said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, in August 2021, Nusbaum got to do more traveling when she went to Guatemala for a medical service trip, while working alongside doctors in local clinics.<\/p>\n<p>It was such an impactful trip that when she came back, she felt the need to share the experience with other students.<\/p>\n<p>Nusbaum served as the campus coordinator between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vidavolunteer.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vida Volunteer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and students at Winona State by reaching out to health students who were Pre-Nursing, Pre\u2013Med, or Pre-Dental, and then assisting them with travel arrangements or answering any questions they had.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Then over spring break, she traveled to Costa Rica with the students she helped.<\/p>\n<p>After her experiences in Costa Rica and Guatemala\u2014both working with doctors snd helping set up clinics in schools, churches, and community centers\u2014Nusbaum came back with a \u201crenewed enthusiasm\u201d and a deeper understanding the importance of healthcare personnel body language and bedside manners to patients.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy goal throughout college and throughout all my studies was to eliminate language barriers,\u201d Nusbaum said, \u201ceven if that means not necessarily focusing on what you&#8217;re saying but what you&#8217;re communicating to your patient through your body language.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In January 2020, she wrote in a journal entry that a piece of her heart will always be in Chile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And now, she has officially bought her ticket back and will be returning to Chile after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>To keep herself motivated for future adventures, she uses her journals to remember the big wins, and the lessons she learned, that seemed small then but grew as time went on.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI learned so much by just being open,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s so important to be open and put yourself in a new culture to let them teach you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our students chase their dreams while earning their degrees.
