{"id":3535,"date":"2022-05-01T19:08:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T00:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/?p=3535"},"modified":"2023-11-28T11:02:48","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T16:02:48","slug":"engineering-his-future-to-space-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/engineering-his-future-to-space-beyond\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering His Future to Space &amp; Beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;Section&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2022\/04\/Untitled-design-7.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Stephen-Shaw-1280&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stephen Shaw has been passionate about learning how things work since he was a kid. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Between that, and his love for math, science, and engineering, the Spring 2022 graduate went for an Engineering degree and has gotten to use his talent and skills in a variety of awesome ways.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shaw began his time at Winona State as a Composite Materials Engineering major. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But as his education continued, he realized he couldn\u2019t explore his interest in physics as much as he wanted on that\u00a0pathway. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He switched his major to General Engineering &#8212; a new program at WSU &#8212; which allowed Shaw to focus on physics, while remaining in the Engineering program. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI like the idea of creating something so innovative and unbelievable that it works,\u201d he said. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Shaw wasn\u2019t digging into his coursework, he was jumping at opportunities to get involved in innovative projects. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shaw, along with four other students, competed in the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gleam Lunar Robotics Challenge that\u2019s put on by the NASA-funded organization called <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minnesota Space Grant Consortium, which holds aerospace science and engineering competitions for high school and college students. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe were tasked with designing an exploration system (including a rover) to explore a totally dark mystery course that was supposed to resemble the moon,&#8221; Shaw said. \u201cI was the Technical Team Lead and also focused on developing the electronic systems for our solution.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a separate project, for the last two years, Shaw has worked on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mechanical and electronic circuit designs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with Dr. Carl Ferkinhoff for the Hardware Astronomy Housekeeping Box known as the H.aHK Box. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Box reads and controls the temperature of certain detectors in a Spectrometer, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">which is an astrophysics instrument in a telescope that detects certain spectrums of light coming in from the universe from distant galaxies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For the detectors to stay cold enough to function, the box relies on hardware and electronics that Shaw helped work on. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This summer, Shaw will take their developments with the H.aHK Box to the 2022 SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation conference in Montreal, Canada. He&#8217;ll submit conference proceedings and present some of his team&#8217;s personal findings. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outside of these projects, Shaw has been involved in more than just research. He was also a part of Physics Club, serving as the treasurer his junior year and Club President this year. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once he graduates, Shaw will start his career as an engineer at Benchmark Electronics in Winona.
