This conference celebrates underserved high school student populations by stressing the power of bilingualism and offering educational workshops that foster pride in diversity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students at Winona State who take an upper-level Global Studies course have the opportunity to design and run workshops at this conference. Amy also incorporates this conference directly into her curriculum in an upper-level Spanish course to give Warriors the space to be proud of their identities:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI would say probably 80% of the students that attended [last year] were Latinx. Most of our students are first generation\u2026 Maybe their parents are immigrants; maybe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they\u2019re <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">immigrants. So, they\u2019re not necessarily a group of students who have had a chance to be on a lot of college campuses and see themselves [in] higher education.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amy gets her students excited about teaching Spanish by bringing them to the yearly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmctlc.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Chailey.seipel%40winona.edu%7Cbc8abcf9c2dc428f57e908dce96699fc%7C5011c7c60ab446ab9ef4fae74a921a7f%7C0%7C0%7C638641874094996572%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=BXSrjL6qA8lEega2BT8ZrXx0Fhs68fuWrmu%2FYxWgCPo%3D&amp;reserved=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minnesota Council on the Teaching of Languages and Cultures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (MCTLC) conference. And as a board member and Future Educator Outreach Coordinator of the MCTLC, Amy focuses on drawing pre-service language teachers from around the state to the conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winona State\u2019s Spanish program provides funding for students to attend the MCTLC conference, putting WSU on the map as a resource for world language education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_divider show_divider=&#8221;off&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_divider][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_blurb title=&#8221;Student Success Leads to Industry Recognition &#8221; image=&#8221;https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/academics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2024\/10\/thumbnail_WSU-Amy-Hornby-Uribe-classroom-student-feature-2016-11-01.jpg&#8221; content_max_width=&#8221;1100px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_level=&#8221;h2&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amy Hornby Uribe\u2019s constant dedication toward her students paved the way for her receiving a special educator\u2019s award this past year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of Amy\u2019s previous students began teaching in Spain right after graduation, and she was so thankful for everything that Amy had done to support her to become a successful world language educator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That student ended up nominating Amy for the 2023 Certificate of Recognition through the Minnesota Council on the Teaching of Languages and Cultures (MCTLC). Amy was selected and awarded last October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This MCTLC award recognizes Amy for her contributions in advising teacher candidates, assisting them in preparing for licensure exams, and finding meaningful clinical placements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amy views this award as a great way to build Winona State University\u2019s Spanish program:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo see that the person who runs the Spanish Teaching program got an award for their service in the field, I think, elevates the program in terms of opening doors for our students as they head out into the profession.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Amy Hornby Uribe is a Spanish educator for future world language teachers.
