Cairo is the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the School\u00a0of Communication of the University of Miami and author of two\u00a0books: \u201cThe Functional Art: an Introduction to Information Graphics\u00a0and Visualization\u201d (2012), and \u201cThe Truthful Art: Data, Charts, and Maps\u00a0for Communication\u201d (2016). Cairo has two decades of experience as\u00a0an infographics and data visualization journalist and designer and\u00a0has worked as a consultant for companies, media organizations and\u00a0educational institutions in more than twenty countries.<\/p>\n<p>The department of mathematics and statistics strives to bring real world industry experts to campus to provide further insight into the field.\u00a0 \u201cThe editing and revision cycle is a crucial part of communicating data insights visually,\u201d says Silas Bergen, assistant professor of statistics and data science.\u00a0 \u201cNo matter how passionately or emphatically I insist in the classroom that \u2018this matters!\u2019, students often need an outside voice to be fully convinced.\u00a0 With someone as experienced and sought-after as Cairo talking about the design process, the importance of editing, and the consequences of settling, classroom ideas are reframed and reinforced.\u00a0 The chance to learn first-hand from an expert of Cairo\u2019s stature invigorates and provides a chance for learning to spill outside the confines of a classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cairo is giving three presentations, all of which are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<h2>Talk #1: Visualization for Effective Communication<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calendarwiz.com\/calendars\/popup.php?op=view&amp;id=131702512&amp;crd=wsu\">Feb 24; 3pm; Stark 103<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scientists usually believe that good and clear design consists just of \u201cbeautifying\u201d their charts, graphs, and maps. This should be an afterthought, as what truly matters is to \u201cshow the data\u201d. This session explains why reasoning about design decisions is as important as reasoning about the data we present to audiences.<\/p>\n<h2>Talk #2: How charts lie: getting smarter about visual information<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calendarwiz.com\/calendars\/popup.php?op=view&amp;id=131705229&amp;crd=wsu\">Feb 24; 7pm; Stark 103<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Graphic designers, data analysts, and\u00a0journalists are taught that \u201ca picture is worth a\u00a0thousand words\u201d, that we should \u201cshow don\u2019t\u00a0tell\u201d, and that charts are \u201cintuitive\u201d and useful\u00a0to \u201csimplify\u201d information. This talk explains\u00a0why these myths, if taken at face value, are\u00a0wrong and dangerous, and what we can do\u00a0to become better readers and designers of\u00a0graphics.<\/p>\n<h2>Talk #3: Engagement and future trends in data communication<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calendarwiz.com\/calendars\/popup.php?op=view&amp;id=131705483&amp;crd=wsu\">Feb 12, 12pm, Gildemeister 155<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Visualization is a language in constant\u00a0evolution.
