He hopes to continue the feeling of camaraderie from his playing days by having fellow alumni build an endowment to support the Winona State football program.<\/p>\n<p>Despite weighing \u201conly about 160,\u201d the Korean War veteran played both the offensive and defensive lines for a Warriors team that battled St. Cloud State Teachers College for a conference championship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very close team, one that still gets together today,\u201d says Peterson, who retired from teaching and coaching in 1986. \u201cI have great memories, and that inspired me to create the Warrior Football Scholarship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/lunder1_curr-winter14-copy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-251\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/lunder1_curr-winter14-copy.png\" alt=\"lunder1_curr-winter14-copy\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/lunder1_curr-winter14-copy.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/lunder1_curr-winter14-copy-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>MITCH LUNDER \u201914<\/b> and Pete Peterson talk football and compare notes on the Warriors\u2019 progress at the 2013 WSU Foundation Scholarship Breakfast. Lunder says the Warrior Football Scholarship gives him an incentive to work hard every day. \u201cWhen somebody is investing in you, you don\u2019t want to take it for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An accounting major from New Prague, Minnesota, Lunder knows all about hard work. He walked-on to the football team, earning a starting role at safety by \u201cgoing all in, giving it everything I had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After an outstanding 2011, he tore three ligaments in his knee and spent the next year either on crutches or in rehabilitation. He made it back for the 2013 season, recording 38 tackles and two interceptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the Warrior Football Scholarship I couldn\u2019t have afforded to come back for a fifth season,\u201d says Lunder. \u201cIt gives kids like me an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MERLE \u201cPETE\u201d PETERSON \u201955 doesn\u2019t want his name attached to the Warrior Football Scholarship.
