{"id":2581,"date":"2013-10-17T21:10:54","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T21:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/2013\/10\/17\/distinguished-young-alumna-melissa-schaller\/"},"modified":"2013-10-17T21:10:54","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T21:10:54","slug":"distinguished-young-alumna-melissa-schaller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/2013\/10\/17\/distinguished-young-alumna-melissa-schaller\/","title":{"rendered":"Distinguished Young Alumna &#8211; Melissa Schaller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.winona.edu\/4664\/distinguished-young-alumna-melissa-schaller\/high_schallerm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2582\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2582\" alt=\"High_SchallerM\" src=\"https:\/\/news.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2013\/10\/High_SchallerM.jpeg\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Melissa Schaller will be honored with the Distinguished Young Alumna award at the 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winona.edu\/\">Winona State University<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alumni.winona.edu\/netcommunity\/page.aspx?pid=258\">Awards of Distinction<\/a> as part of the school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.winona.edu\/4615\/celebrate-homecoming-2013\/\">Homecoming celebration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each year WSU and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alumni.winona.edu\/\">Alumni Society<\/a> recognize individuals for their outstanding commitment to the university and to improving our world. Distinguished Young Alumni award recipients are graduates 45 years old or younger who have distinguished themselves in their work or in their community.<\/p>\n<p>Schaller graduated cum laude from Winona State in 1995 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in elementary education and special education, and received licensures in elementary education, mild to moderate mental impairments and specific learning disabilities. While attending WSU, she was a resident assistant and was on the Student Council for Exceptional Children.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from WSU, Schaller received her master\u2019s degree in special education and licensure in emotional behavioral disorders from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stthomas.edu\/\">University of St. Thomas<\/a> in St. Paul, Minn. She also earned licensures as a work experience coordinator-handicapped, director of special education and principal from <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.umn.edu\/twincities\/index.html\">University of Minnesota<\/a>, as well as a superintendent licensure from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnsu.edu\/\">Minnesota State University-Mankato<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schaller\u2019s numerous accomplishments in her career include being president of the executive board for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnase.org\/\">Minnesota Association for Special Education<\/a>, president of the executive board for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mncec.org\/\">Minnesota Council for Exceptional Children<\/a> and serving on the board of directors for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedarvalleyservices.org\/\">Cedar Valley Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schaller currently works as the Director of Special Education for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isd917.k12.mn.us\/\">Intermediate School District 917<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.rosemount.mn.us\/\">Rosemount, Minn<\/a>., where she is in charge of managing personnel, facilitating staff development opportunities, collaborating with member districts, and developing and maintaining a budget of approximately $18 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.winona.edu\/4667\/2013-wsu-distinguished-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to learn more about WSU\u2019s 2013 Awards of Distinction.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melissa Schaller will be honored with the Distinguished Young Alumna award at the 2013 Winona State University Awards of Distinction as part of the school\u2019s Homecoming celebration.
