{"id":2971,"date":"2021-06-03T14:06:50","date_gmt":"2021-06-03T14:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/?p=2971"},"modified":"2021-06-09T14:09:21","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T14:09:21","slug":"helping-pit-bulls-one-book-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/2021\/06\/03\/helping-pit-bulls-one-book-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Helping Pit Bulls One Book at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_5,3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/05\/SaveABullBook.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;SaveABullBook&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cassie Douglas &#8217;18 wanted to make a difference in the world by using her talents as a writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the help of her partner and a nonprofit, she\u2019s making a difference for American Pit Bull Terriers in Minnesota through a children\u2019s book the team published late last year, called \u201cA Chance to Rescue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back in 2020 Douglas reached out to a rescue shelter for Pit Bulls in Minneapolis named Save-A-Bull to see if her writing could help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The nonprofit was overjoyed to get the request.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was completely blown away,\u201d Jolene Coleman, an employee at Save-A-Bull Rescue said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The organization had been hit hard from not hosting fundraisers during the pandemic and was in desperate need to replace funds that were lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe idea of writing a children&#8217;s book was initially one of those far-fetched ideas that we would explore making it happen,\u201d Coleman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With Douglas as the author and her WSU alum fianc\u00e9 Zach Spanton &#8217;17 as the illustrator, their book was published in December 2020, has sold more than 200 copies, and has raised $670 to go directly towards the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI do not believe this idea would have happened had it not been for Cassie reaching out to inquire about assisting with a writing opportunity,\u201d Coleman said. \u201cAnd the fact that Zach was a talented illustrator was a bonus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The story highlights a Pit Bull\u2019s journey from being a stray living on the streets to being rescued by a local organization and later adopted by a loving home. More importantly, the book directly confronts stereotypes that have been placed on Pit Bulls as being aggressive, dangerous, and having a negative temperament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When writing the story, it was important to both Douglas and Spanton to debunk the negative stereotypes and raise awareness on the importance of adopting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book also hit on a passion for Douglas and Spanton. The couple already own two cats and look forward to welcoming other animals, including a Pit Bull, into their home. Previous to the book, Spanton had experience with understanding the stereotypes and negative restrictions owners of Pit Bulls are faced with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c(My brother) moved from California to Wisconsin and typically you would fly a pet in a kennel, but they don\u2019t allow Pit Bulls (on the plane),\u201d Spanton said. \u201cHe had to have his dog delivered to him through a truck shipping company that transports pets.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As for the organization, the book is making a difference in the Minneapolis community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_3,1_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe were able to raise money that is desperately needed so we can continue to not only provide the basics of food and supplies for foster dogs but also much-needed vetting care,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lorelei Noire, a Save-A-Bull Rescue employee and the book\u2019s project manager.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It also inspired and validated that the organization was doing great work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCassie and Zach believed in what we do as a rescue and that was important,\u201d Noire said.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The actual production of the book, especially in this time of COVID where philanthropy is low, was even more generous.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A number of books were put into \u201cfree\u201d library stands around Minneapolis as a way to spread the word about the Save-a-Bull Rescue organization.
