It’s that time of year again–Homecoming 2013 is finally here! The week of Oct. 14-20 is filled with fun, school spirit, and memories to be made. This week is packed with all sorts of campus activities from the Medallion Hunt, to a Twinkie Eating contest, sports games from football to volleyball to soccer, #wsuhoco13 is sure to be one homecoming we will never forget.
For me, homecoming in years past has always been a chance for me to have fun with fellow Warriors and enjoy the beautiful fall weather in Winona. As a hometown kid, Winona State’s homecoming has always been a special event. I remember as a kid going to the parade, and football games not knowing yet that someday I would get to be a student taking part in all of the other exciting activities homecoming week brings with it.
This year Homecoming began yesterday with the Medallion Hunt’s first clue. The medallion hunt is a campus wide event and the medallion could be hidden in any nook or cranny. So, how well do you know your campus? Will you be the lucky recipient of the $50 reward? Stay tuned to the WSU Update and the WSU Facebook page for clues throughout the week. Don’t miss out on the fun!
Of course, you can’t forget to check out Pep Fest and Club Fair that will be held on Friday. The two events will be running together with the announcement of Homecoming King and Queen, contest winners, free corn dogs and chips for the first 800 people, and of course the Twinkie Eating Contest at 11:30am. Between classes or during some downtime between studying for classes, be sure to check out what is going on in the Courtyard for #wsuhoco13!
Saturday will be filled with all sorts of can’t-miss events, starting with the traditional Homecoming Parade on Huff St. This year’s theme is “Island City Luau” so floats might be a literal description! I expect there will be plenty of Hawaiin shirts and grass skirts paired with WSU logowear.
And of course, sporting events! The Warrior Football team will take on Wayne State at 2:30pm at Verizon Wireless Stadium and the Women’s Volleyball team will also play Wayne State at 6pm in the McCown Fieldhouse. The homecoming football game has been the event I’ve attended each year. There’s something special about being a part of this school, and showing Warrior spirit at Verizon Wireless Stadium. Throughout the years I’ve met many people at the game that I wouldn’t have met anywhere else on campus because it brings much of the student body together for a fun-filled Saturday afternoon.
Later Saturday evening in the Harriet B. Johnson Auditorium, Emily Galati’s comedy show will keep comedy fans laughing into the night starting at 8pm.
On Sunday, the WSU Women’s Soccer team will wrap up Homecoming weekend with a game against UM-Crookston at 1pm in the Verizon Wireless Stadium.
Mark your calendars, set reminders in your phone, because Winona State Homecoming 2013 will be an incredible week! Don’t forget to hit social media with #wsuhoco13 to keep your friends up to date on events, and let the world know how big Warrior Nation is.
Have fun!
