Many\u00a0<\/span>holiday traditions may be<\/span>\u00a0disrupted\u00a0<\/span>this year\u00a0<\/span>due to the COVID-19 pandemic,<\/span>\u00a0but<\/span>\u00a0the generous spirit of\u00a0<\/span>the Winona State University community will continue to improve our world throughout the season and beyond.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Every holiday season<\/span>\u00a0the Department of Graduate Nursing collects donations<\/span>\u00a0of food and clothing<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>local service\u00a0<\/span>organization<\/span>s. This year<\/span>, arranging to collect and deliver<\/span>\u00a0physical<\/span>\u00a0donations would pose barriers\u00a0<\/span>to allowing participation from our entire campus<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To overcome these obstacles our students and faculty have worked together to find creative and inclusive solutions to move forward with learning and service opportunities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Natalie Bauman, a graduate nursing student at WSU, was\u00a0<\/span>inspired to help continue the department<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s tradition of holiday giving that allowed everyone to safely participate.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Bauman created a virtual fund drive to raise money for the Second Harvest Heartland, the Upper Midwest\u2019s largest hunger-relief organization.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cOur community\u2019s working families, children and seniors are in need like never before,\u201d she explains. \u201cVisits to the food shelves, soup kitchens and shelters that make up the distribution network for Second Harvest Heartland have doubled in just the past five years.
