{"id":874,"date":"2013-11-22T15:22:29","date_gmt":"2013-11-22T15:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/improvingourworld.winonastateu.com\/?p=874"},"modified":"2022-04-05T18:26:22","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T18:26:22","slug":"ace-in-the-hole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/improving-our-world\/2013\/11\/22\/ace-in-the-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"ACE in the Hole"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_877\" style=\"width: 934px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/improvingourworld.winonastateu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Sami-ACE.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-877\" class=\"size-full wp-image-877\" src=\"https:\/\/improvingourworld.winonastateu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Sami-ACE.png\" alt=\"An ACE volunteer works on a mountain side\" width=\"924\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This could be me&#8211;or you!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have found something that combines my passion for conservation with the opportunity to make a difference in my country\u2026now if only I got paid for it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/usaconservation\">American Conservation Experience<\/a>, or ACE, is a conservation program through AmeriCorps that trains volunteers to, according to their official site, \u201cundertake practical environmental restoration projects in America\u2019s national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starting in mid-May, I will be travelling to Flagstaff, AZ to work in either Flagstaff or in Hurricane, Utah for three months and will be doing an internship that entails hard labor conservation work.\u00a0 I will have to adjust from my cozy life as a Winona State English major, where the most adventure I seem to have these days is translating Shakespeare into an English that I can actually understand, to living, breathing, and being outside 24\/7.<\/p>\n<p>According to ACE\u2019s website, \u201cACE is grounded in the philosophy that cooperative labor on meaningful conservation projects fosters cross-cultural understanding and operates on the belief that challenging volunteer service unites people of all backgrounds in common cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their goal is to take public wildlife areas throughout the United States and put people to work on them in order to create bonds and life skills.
