But, in honor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/public-education\/campaigns\/fire-prevention-week\">National\u00a0Fire Prevention Week<\/a>, what else can we do to make sure we are prepared for an emergency like a fire? If you&#8217;re living off-campus, run through this fire safety checklist:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Make sure your fire alarms are\u00a0less than\u00a010 years old.<\/strong> You should check the date on your fire alarm and make sure it isn\u2019t any older than 10 years. Fire alarms should be changed every 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) You should test your alarms once every month.<\/strong> It\u2019s important to make sure they\u2019re working properly, so check\u00a0them using the test button.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Remember to change the battery.<\/strong> Some batteries in fire alarms don\u2019t last as long as others, so make sure you\u2019re frequently checking if they&#8217;re working\u00a0properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Have a smoke alarm on every floor, in every bathroom and in sleeping areas.<\/strong> Not every home has the exact number of alarms recommend. Double check that you have fire alarms in all the necessary locations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) In the case of a fire, your immediate reaction should only be to get outside right away.<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t go to your closet and grab your favorite pieces of clothing and then all your electronics. Your safety is the most important thing, and material items are replaceable.
