Head-quartered in Rochester, Minnesota, this philanthropic foundation\u2019s goal is to help battle addiction stigma by supporting individuals in recovery that may be pursuing education, employment and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>As a past addictions counselor and daughter of a recovering alcoholic, Tori Utley knows the ignominy that can follow those in addictions recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Grounded in mission as a not for profit financial support group,\u00a0More Than An Addict,\u00a0helps spread the light of hope through monetary means via grants, scholarships,\u00a0micro loans and venture capital.<\/p>\n<p>More Than An Addict\u00a0is a relatively new non-profit recovery organization, yet it has already made across the country impact as recipient of the Judge\u2019s Choice Winner for the Recovery Brands #LIVESChallenge.\u00a0More Than An Addict\u2019<em>s<\/em>\u00a0video \u201cThis Is a Journey,\u201d staring Chelsee Ferk, earned the organization $5,000 as start-up capital.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, More Than An Addict is partnering with Collider, a Rochester based entrepreneurial &#8220;hub&#8221; that offers desk and conference space for small businesses and\u00a0RCO\u00a0(Recovery Community Organization<em>)<\/em>\u00a0to present a December 2016 awarding of an educational scholarship of $1,000 and an entrepreneurial award valued over $1,000 to individuals in long term recovery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/improving-our-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/11\/tedtalk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3071 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.winona.edu\/improving-our-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/11\/tedtalk.jpg\" alt=\"tedtalk\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the near future, Tori Utley will be able to be viewed in a TEDx talk from TedxZumbroRiver (taped Spring 2016) titled, \u201cWhy Recovering Addicts Make the Best Employees.\u201d In her TEDx talk, Tori shares more about\u00a0More Than An Addict\u00a0and her collaboration with her father to open \u201csober housing\u201d for those seeking recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong>-Marcia Mihalovic<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past semester I had the opportunity to sit down with founder and executive director Tori Utley of\u00a0More Than An Addict\u00a0to discuss recovery stigma, education, and advocacy outreach.
