We have\u00a0seen many celebs get canceled all over social media for cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is\u00a0the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity. Most\u00a0often times\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0unintentional due to the lack of knowledge\u00a0of\u00a0other cultures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Well,\u00a0what is\u00a0the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation? Appreciation is when someone\u00a0seeks\u00a0to understand and learn about another culture\u00a0to\u00a0broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Appropriation on the other hand, is simply taking one aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your own personal interest.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In terms of\u00a0Halloween,\u00a0it is always\u00a0appropriation\u00a0not appreciation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Halloween is not the time to dress as other races or cultures as is appropriation.\u00a0When planning a Halloween costume\u00a0ask yourself these questions:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Could I classify this costume as tribal, traditional, native or another race-specific description?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Does this costume play into racial stereotypes?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n

    • Do I need to try a new hair\u00a0style that people of my race don\u2019t traditionally have?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Do I need to use face paint to make the costume work?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Do I need to exaggerate my facial features to look good in my costume?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Is this costume representing another culture that I am not part of?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Would I want someone from that culture to see me in my costume?\u00a0Would I get canceled on social media for wearing this?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you may want to re-think your costume.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Sugar Skulls are not a costume or decoration. Instead, they are a symbolic representation of the life cycle, death, and rebirth. Therefore, these face paintings are only appropriate during D\u00eda De Los Muertos. <\/em>If you want a spooky costume, dressing as a skeleton is a fun alternative.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If comfort is your goal this Halloween, there’s nothing wrong with wearing some comfy reindeer footie pajamas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
