Access to trans affirmative healthcare if critical to the wellbeing of our community. There is estimated to be more than two million transgender people throughout the U.S. They come from all walks of life, representing all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as all faith traditions. As trans people become more visible, an increase in understanding regarding their community has become more vital. This article aims to offer definitions, along with general education about hormone therapy and trans surgery. Resources will be listed at the end of the article for those who wish to utilize them. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Please note: This article does not hold a certain political affiliation or belief system. The intended goal here is to provide a safe place for students to seek out resources or proper information regarding transgender health services.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Definition of Transgender: <\/span><\/b>The term \u201ctransgender\u201d is an umbrella term that describes someone whose gender identity is different than their sex assigned at birth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_blurb title=”Feminizing Hormone Therapy ” admin_label=”Fem Hor” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n What is it?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Feminizing hormone therapy is used to induce physical changes in your body caused by female hormones during puberty (secondary sex characteristics) to promote the matching of your gender identity and your body (gender congruence).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If feminizing hormone therapy is started before the changes of male puberty begin, male secondary sex characteristics, such as increased body hair and changes in voice pitch, can be avoided. Feminizing hormone therapy is also known as gender-affirming hormone therapy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n How does it work?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During feminizing hormone therapy, you\u2019ll be given medication to block the action of the hormone testosterone. In addition, you\u2019ll be given the hormone, estrogen to decrease testosterone production and induce feminine secondary sex characteristics. The changes that result from these medications can be temporary or permanent. Feminizing hormone therapy could also be done alone or paired with feminizing surgery.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If used in an adolescent, hormone therapy typically begins at age 16. Ideally, treatment starts before the development of secondary sex characteristics so that teens can go through puberty as their identified gender. Today, many people prefer to use the terms gender affirmation or confirmation surgery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What are the types of transgender surgery?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Common transgender surgery options include <\/span>facial reconstructive surgery<\/span> (to make facial features more masculine or feminine), <\/span>chest or \u201ctop\u201d surgery<\/span> (to remove breast tissue for a more masculine appearance or enhance breast size and shape for a more feminine appearance) and <\/span>genital or \u201cbottom\u201d surgery<\/span> (to transform and reconstruct the genitalia).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Why is it done?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n People may have surgery so that their physical body matches their gender identity. People who choose gender affirmation surgery do so because they experience gender dysphoria.
