Unexpected emergencies can happen, and being prepared can make a difference. Because of this, Winona State University has strategically put Narcan (naloxone) in every AED container throughout campus. It\u2019s easy to use, 100% free, and it\u2019s encouraged to carry it with you everywhere you go.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Having Narcan on hand is a simple gesture that can make a big difference, but it is as important to preserve it properly. To keep Narcan functional, avoid locations with extreme or varying temperatures, such as keeping in your car during the summer and winter months. It is preferred to store it in a dry, temperature-controlled location, like a desk drawer or a handbag.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title=”Narcan, The Superhero” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ admin_label=”The Superhero\u00a0” content_max_width=”1100px”]<\/p>\n Naloxone<\/span><\/span><\/a> is <\/span>a<\/span> medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid <\/span>overdose and<\/span> is commonly known as Narcan<\/span>. <\/span>It<\/span>‘s<\/span> an <\/span>opioid antagonist<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>it attaches to opioid receptors <\/span>to<\/span> reverse<\/span> and block the effects <\/span>of <\/span>opioids. <\/span>Naloxone<\/span> can <\/span>quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped <\/span>due to an<\/span> opioid overdose<\/span> from<\/span>\u00a0heroin, <\/span>fentanyl\u2013which is <\/span>commonly mixed into other drugs<\/span>, and oxycodon<\/span>e<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Narcan <\/span>only works to re<\/span>verse<\/span> the effects of opioid overdoses <\/span>and does not work on alcohol and other drug-related overdoses<\/span>. <\/span>N<\/span>arcan <\/span>will NOT hurt the <\/span>recipient <\/span>if they are not experiencing an opioid overdose<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title=”How to Use Narcan” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ admin_label=”How to” content_max_width=”1100px”]<\/p>\n If you suspect that someone is overdosing from opioids, look out for these <\/span>signs and symptoms: <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Remove the Narcan from the package and <\/span>insert the device into the nose<\/span><\/a>. Firmly press into the nasal passageways and push on the plunger of the Narcan to administer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Call 911 immediately after the 1st dose<\/span><\/b> and wait 2-3 minutes for the first dose to work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While waiting for the Narcan to take effect, give the person some space as it quickly puts their system into withdrawal state \u2013 and it\u2019s not exactly a warm awakening <\/span>as they may become angry<\/span><\/a>. The best thing you can do is remain calm, give them room, and let the experts handle things when they get there.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Stay with the person until first responders arrive.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is possible that the person\u00a0may not wake up from the first dose or become sleepy again.
