Federated Insurance, which provides insurance protection to business owners and affinity groups, supports scholarships for Winona State students in five areas:  Accounting, Business, Computer Science, Paralegal Studies and Criminal Justice, and Intercollegiate Athletics.

“Providing scholarships is one of the ways Federated Insurance gets to know the students and professors at Winona State,” says Scott McCauley, information systems resource manager for the Owatonna, Minnesota, based company.

“The students learn about the skills we require for careers, what our company does and has to offer, and what our corporate culture is like. Federated Insurance has a longstanding partnership with Winona State University and we are very proud of the many employees we have that earned their degrees at WSU.”

“The scholarships are a mutually beneficial investment in time and resources that, in the end, pay off for both of us.”

I have a job lined up at IBM as a software test engineer. As a non-traditional student with a previous bachelor’s degree, the Federated Insurance scholarship has made pursuing a career change through a second degree more affordable.

There’s no way I could have gone to Winona State without the Federated Insurance scholarship and the others I’m receiving. Now I’m planning on going to law school at the University of Wisconsin and may go into insurance law.

The scholarship gave me the confidence and incentive to search for additional scholarships to help pay for my education at Winona State. Their support has enabled me to set aside the time and purchase materials to prepare for the CPA exam this May.

Getting to know the company and culture through the scholarship showed me what is out there, what the options are for careers in human resources, and what I could do in the field.
