Winona State University recently hosted 2 successful BizTalk events, continuing its commitment to bring together regional business leaders for meaningful, solutions‑focused conversations about today’s most pressing workplace challenges.

Designed to foster dialogue, connection, and practical learning, BizTalk events provide participants with insights they can immediately apply within their organizations.

The first BizTalk, held in November at the Winona Family YMCA, centered on the theme “Healthy Employees, Stronger Businesses.”

Hosted in partnership with the YMCA, this session focused on workforce retention and employee well‑being—2 critical concerns for employers navigating workforce shortages and evolving employee expectations.

Janneke Sobeck, CEO of the Winona Family YMCA, along with members of her leadership team, led a collaborative discussion on how supporting employee wellness can directly impact retention, engagement, and productivity.

Attendees explored practical strategies employers can implement to support both physical and mental well‑being, while also discussing the broader business case for investing in employee health.

The session emphasized that wellness initiatives are no longer “nice to have,” but essential components of a resilient and sustainable workforce.

Peer‑to‑peer conversation played a key role, allowing business professionals to share challenges, exchange ideas, and learn from others facing similar workforce issues.

Participants left with a deeper understanding of how creating a culture of wellness strengthens not only employees but also business outcomes.

A group discussion led by ACE partner Kristine Valk

The second BizTalk, hosted in January at Merchants Bank in Winona, focused on the theme “Crucial Conversations in the Workplace.”

This morning session brought together area leaders for coffee, connection, and an engaging discussion led by Cat Breet and Kristine Valk of Merchants Bank.

The conversation centered on navigating high‑stakes workplace discussions—those moments when opinions differ, emotions run strong, and trust is on the line.

Drawing from Merchants Bank’s experience with its “I Believe Leadership” program, developed in partnership with Winona State, the presenters shared strategies for approaching difficult conversations with clarity, confidence, and calm.

Attendees explored how intentional communication can turn challenging discussions into opportunities for growth, stronger relationships, and improved teamwork.

The session reinforced the idea that how leaders show up in critical moments can significantly influence culture and results.

Together, these 2 BizTalk events highlighted the core strengths of the program: real‑world leadership insights, practical solutions, and meaningful connections among regional business professionals.

Whether addressing employee wellness or communication during challenging moments, BizTalks create space for thoughtful conversation and shared learning.

Winona State continues to host BizTalk events as a valuable resource for leaders looking to strengthen their teams, adapt to change, and enhance leadership across our business community.
