I know what you’re thinking–who has time to read for pleasure amid the pile of projects, papers and assigned reading during the semester?! I know where you’re coming from, and let me assure you, I don’t get the chance to pick up a book of my choosing nearly as much as I’d like during the school year. But I still believe in the awesome health benefits of simply paging through a good book–fiction novel, nonfiction prose or otherwise, even for just a few minutes. And here’s why:
1. Reading can help you sleep better
That’s right. Looking at your phone, iPad or e-reader before bed is not only making it harder for you to fall asleep, but new studies suggest that it affects your alertness the next day. So pick up an old-fashioned paper book and sleep soundly.
2. Reading relaxes you
Reading is a great way to unwind at the end of any stressful day. Even though you should maybe pick up that biology book in the few spare minutes you have before bed, it might not be doing any favors for your stress levels.
3. Reading keeps your brain sharp
Your intellectual health is benefited by reading not only in the moment, but as you age it helps you keep all your marbles. Not to mention you’ll be more able to join into intellectual conversations with your friends!
4. Reading is a great workout buddy
A book can make your time on the treadmill, bike or elliptical whiz by, giving your workout some extra sustaining power. Choose a novel with a thrilling plot and get sucked into a book instead of finding yourself bored at the gym.
5. Reading can encourage life goals
Studies show that reading about characters overcoming obstacles or identifying with a courageous character can encourage you to create your own life goals, improving your occupational wellness and helping you feel personally fulfilled.
So there you have it. Picking up a book is not only something you’ll enjoy, but also something that benefits all facets of your health. Escape the stress of daily life with a good book, even if only for a few minutes.
