Minnesota is the front runner in vaccine efforts in the Midwest with nearly 70% of the statewide population have received at least one dose of their COVID-19 vaccine, it’s easy to think everything COVID-19 is behind us.

As the new Delta variant has emerged and entered our home state, we need to stay strong as a warrior community to help prevent the spread to those who have not received their vaccination yet.

Currently Winona County is approaching 30% of college aged persons (18-24 years old) vaccinated. We have a long way to go to reach the nationwide minimum goal of 70% that would allow for continued in-person activities and events.

Count on Me to Vax Up

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine will help to protect you from getting seriously ill and is effective from getting the delta variant. It’s important to note that break through cases are possible, meaning that even if you are vaccinated it is still possible to get COVID-19. Break through cases tend to have less severe symptoms and are more manageable.

In relation to the Delta variant, those who are vaccinated are less likely to become severely ill but are more likely to carry and transmit the virus to others without knowing that they are ill or asymptomatic. It’s important to get self-report at the first sign of any illness… which leads me to my next point.

Count on Me to Mask Up

Wear a mask whenever you are indoors and in areas of high traffic.

WSU has issued a mask mandate for the start of the fall semester to help keep transmission rates low and as a precautionary effort to keep our community safe. As we learned throughout the past year, masks are an effective tool in preventing transmission. However, masks are only effective when they are paired with other precautionary efforts.

Count on Me to Back Up

Physical distancing in combination with masking helps to further prevent the spread of illness. Hanging out in smaller groups or doing activities outdoors will also help keep COVID-19 away. Make fall 2021 be the semester where you form a tight knit group of friends who will be your ride or die for the rest of your college career.

It may feel as though we are taking a huge step backwards from where we were when the semester ended this past spring. For some it may even be triggering with worries that our campus will transition back to online only.

Rest assured that these precautionary efforts are to keep you and others safe. We’ve been doing this for over a year at this point. The knowledge, guidance, and resources we’ve collected and created has helped us to make the most informative and proactive decisions possible.
