For some, the topic of ‘sex toys’ may be awkward to talk about. However, sex toys can be a vital part of sexual health or intimacy. It is completely normal to use them by yourself or with a partner(s). It can enhance the experience for all parties involved, especially after consent has been given. Or it can be a way to engage with yourself and get to know your own body without the risks of STI’s and unplanned pregnancy.

Use

For clarification purposes, a sex toy is an object people use to experience more pleasure during intercourse or masturbation. These toys are commonly used personally, with another person, or on another person. A few broad benefits that come with engaging in the use of sex toys is increased pleasure, stimulation and improved sleep. It is also used to help improve sexual dysfunction or medical conditions.  

Regarding more specific benefits surrounding the personal use of sex toys, individuals can experience improved confidence in one’s body or self and sexual discovery. There is also zero risk for STI’s or unplanned pregnancy when engaging in self-pleasure.  

On the other hand, regarding sex toy usage amongst a partner(s), there are additional benefits. A few notable mentions include less pressure to perform, enhanced intimacy and guaranteed pleasure for both parties.   

*When using sex toys with others, remember to use a clean toy, condoms and other barrier methods to decrease the risk of STIs.  

Sex toys are also beneficial for transgender, nonbinary or gender nonconforming people, certain toys can help affirm their gender identity or help relieve gender dysphoria. 

Sex Toy Types

Cock Rings: Rings that go around your scrotum and/or penis. They slow blood flow out of the penis when it’s erect, which can increase sensation or can make your erection harder/last longer. 

Vibrators: Objects that vibrate to stimulate the genitals. 

Dildos: Objects that go inside the vagina, anus or mouth. 

Anal Toys: Sex toys specifically made to stimulate or go inside your anus.

How to Clean Your Toys

  1. Remember to clean it after every use, and then properly store it after (bag, container etc.)! 
  2. Search on Amazon or at your local Walmart/Target for special toy cleaners! You can either use unscented hand soap, purchase the Natural Fresh Toy Cleaner (Walmart $14) or the Doc Johnson Antibacterial Cleaner (Amazon $17). 
  3. If the toy is battery operated, remember to remove the batteries *if applicable* before cleaning! 
  4. Silicone, glass and stainless-steel materials: Surface clean first, then submerge in boiling water for three minutes. 
  5. Other materials: Wash the toy using unscented hand soap and warm water (dish soap would be way too harsh and cause irritation on the skin)

How to Store Your Sex Toys

Many sex toys these days will come with a bag or box intended for storing it, but you can also purchase storage bags from retailers. Ziploc bags are a great way to store toys, but make sure to only put a clean toy in each bag. You can store multiple toys (in their individual bags) in a larger plastic storage bin, preferably one with a lid to prevent dust from getting on your toys! 

Sex toys offer a multitude of benefits whether it is for personal pleasure, or partner(s) use.  It is a great way to lower sexual health risks, enhance intimacy with a partner and become more confident in one’s body.
