“The Secret in the Wings” Production | Oct. 15-18
From October 15 to the 18 , the Winona State Theatre Department showcased Secret in the Wings, a play written by Mary Zimmerman that highlighted the lesser known Grimm Fairytales.
The show had a darker tone where each story bled into the next without a resolution until the very end. This style of play is referred to as a metamorphoses play, which uses modern language in mythical settings, dreamy imagery, and musical accompaniment that give the play a mythical quality rather than a realistic one. As Charlie Lund, a main actor in the play, put it, Secret in the Wings was “weird in a good way.”
“I and You” Production | Nov. 19
On November 19, the WSU Theater Department opened I and You, a play by Lauren Gunderson that featured actors Leah Blanchette and Daniel Lozano, directed by Heather Williams-Williams in the Black Box Theater. The play followed the fluctuating friendship between Caroline and Anthony, two students brought together by a school project.
The intimate atmosphere of Black Box Theater made it feel as if you were in the room with them, watching their relationship unfold with its beautiful ties to Walt Whitman’s poetry and the complexity of the human experience. It’s a testament to the resilience of young people, even when they’re faced with unbelievable challenges that go far beyond the confines of a group project — and even reality.
