Common Book Series & Great River Reading Series | Sept-Oct
The English Department at Winona State flourished last semester with their choices for the Common Book Series and the Great River Reading Series.
For the Common Book series, Mary Roach’s “Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law” crossed interdisciplinary lines with Roach’s witty writing style (for the Liberal Arts students) and with her scientific research into what happens when plants and animals become a major concern for humans and ways we should be improving our relationship with the natural world (for the College of Science and Engineering students).
Fuzz is an essential read for any Mary Roach fan looking to expand their horizons and peek into the world of human-animal conflict. As for the Great River Reading Series, this year, Darius Atefat-Peckham’s book of poetry, “Book of Kin”, stole the hearts and minds of the English Department. With ties to the English Department’s Dr. Debra Cumberland, Atefat-Peckham’s book of sincere, heart wrenching, and down-to-earth poems captured his experiences as a young boy caught between two cultures, Iranian and American, coping with the loss of his late mother.
