By now, you’ve probably heard of NextGen and Workday.
You may have heard too much. You may have heard too little. You might be feeling confused and perhaps a bit apprehensive. It’s understandable!
We’re here to cut through the tech jargon and tell you what you really need to know to be ready.
What Is NextGen?
Think of NextGen as our big system-wide tech makeover.
This initiative will create a fresh and improved tech environment that serves everyone—students, faculty, and staff—across all Minnesota State colleges and universities.
What Is Workday?
Workday is the star of the NextGen show. It’s not just any tool—it’s a game-changer. Workday will be stepping in to replace ISRS and revamp our finance and HR systems.
Imagine a cloud-based platform that’s designed to make our lives easier by streamlining all sorts of tasks from timesheets and absence management to budgets and grants. Sounds good, right?
The best part is that Workday is built to be user-friendly and integrated, making it your go-to portal for pretty much everything you’ll need to manage your daily work tasks.
Workday Implementation Timeline
The first phase of Workday is rolling out in July with new tools for finance and human resource management. This will include services for faculty and staff for things like timesheets, absence requests, budgeting, and purchasing.
All employees have already been enrolled in ELM training that will prepare you for this first phase of the launch.

More detailed dates will be finalized very soon. While the student-focused features are still in the works, we’re expecting them to launch by 2028.
