Satori 2026 | Apr. 24

The Satori, Winona State’s Student Literary Arts Journal, was a semester-long creative journal-making process created by the editors of English 324: Projects in Writing and Language and led by Dr. Liberty Kohn.

The process of soliciting submissions included a variety of social media posts and printed flyers to advertise the Satori submissions, from late January through mid-February. While receiving submissions, the class studied the legal and production processes of book creation, including monitoring trends across a wide variety of published literary journals.

After the February 16th submission deadline had passed, the class began the process of selecting and editing works for publication based on the values of Winona State University while working to emphasize creativity from the student submissions. Each section of the Satori, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and artwork/photography, formed its own “committee” and, after operating independently, came back together to form the Satori layout.

As for the creation process, a select number of students used InDesign for the physical Satori itself, while other groups worked together using Canva to create its companion, another unique literary arts journal, Irotas, that includes submissions that were not featured in Satori.

On April 23rd, Satori editors Shaela Eriksen, Camden McDonald, Jade McElmury, and I presented a poster presentation for Research & Creative Achievement Day, which garnered attention from students and faculty alike.

The final edition of the Satori was completed and published on April 24th, with the help of the Winona State Print Shop, which printed around 400 copies for distribution at both Winona State and in the larger Winona area.
